The event will consider a variety of perspectives including the encouragement of community involvement\, awareness and education in shaping the environment. SUMMARY:Brockley Historical Walk led by Gillian Heywood MBE
DESCRIPTION:Meet outside Pistachio’s Hilly Fields Cafe. Walk through Brockley Conservation Area and several mews\, ending at the Wickham Arms\, SE4 1TF \nBrockley Conservation Area is an unusually well preserved enclave of architectural and environmental history that has survived into the 21st century almost intact. By the 1870s ‘Upper Brockley’ was laid out with wide streets and large Italianate villas backed by free-access mews service lanes. The unique environment was created to respond to the alignment of former country lanes\, field patterns\, footpaths and streams. \nGillian Heywood received her MBE for Service to our Community. She has been a particularly tireless and formidably well-informed defender and campaigner.

Guided Tours by Brockley Society: 11am\, 12.30 and 2pm\, about 45 minutes\, through Ashby\, Wickham and Breakspears Mews) \nYou can book a place or just turn up. Self-guided walks at other times with a map and information leaflet available on the event webpage here. \nBreakspears Mews Community Garden will be open 12 to 4pm for refreshments. \nThe tour and printed material on the day will describe Brockley’s early history; 19th century High Victorian development; careful street layout with mews; the 1970s battle to protect mews and gardens from development; and several stunning modern buildings.
